Did you know that the Society of Organized Services Meals on Wheels program is available in our local area?
The Meals on Wheels program was established in October 1973, and started in a member’s home in Nanoose Bay, with about 15 meals prepared per week. Forty-five years later, meals are prepared at Arrowsmith Lodge, and almost 12,000 meals were delivered in 2019.
Reasons for receiving Meals on Wheels are not limited to those no longer able to cook for themselves, clients recuperating from an accident or surgery, post-natal single moms, and caregivers looking for a break from cooking for themselves, are also welcomed into the program.
Hot nutritious meals are delivered up to three times per week, by dedicated volunteer drivers, to clients’ homes located between Nanoose Bay and Deep Bay. A wellness check during meal delivery is also part of our service, as often the meal recipient is home alone, or housebound, most of the time. During the COVID pandemic, all drivers are health screened regularly, use hand-sanitizer between each meal delivery and maintain physical distancing when approaching the client’s home.
SOS is committed to helping those in need to maintain health and independence by delivering a low-sodium, diabetic friendly meal. If you, a friend, or neighbour, would benefit from the delivery of hot nutritious meals, please spread the word about the Meals on Wheels program. I have attached the current sample menu, as well as a brochure for your perusal, please copy and distribute them as you feel necessary.
