To Whom It May Concern
The serious issue of traffic safety for residents along Corcan Road in the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Electoral Area H is the result of the rapid development of the Meadowood subdivisions, vehicular speed, narrowness of the roadway, no Inland Island Highway access and the lack of pedestrian right of way in a rural residential area.
Although these are rural communities with a posted speed limit of 60 k/ph, the rapid development of Meadowood and the lack of an access to the Inland Island Highway have resulted in a significant increase in traffic on Corcan Road. This traffic includes passenger cars, moving vans, delivery vans, gravel trucks, and emergency vehicles. The location of an active commercial gravel pit at the end of Corcan Road exacerbates the situation. The result is the unsafe separation of vehicle traffic and pedestrian movement, to include school bus stops for our children and the unacceptable excessive time to react for ambulances going to the Meadowood subdivisions.
This issue was brought before the MOTI Transportation Advisory Committee by the RDN representative eight years ago. Nothing came of this intervention. Since then I have personally met with the MOTI District Manager on numerous occasions outlining the problems. Again to no avail. At the RDN and residents’ requests the area has seen increased RCMP Patrols and Speed Watch on numerous occasions. Again to no avail.
The Corcan-Meadowood Residents Association has been formed specifically to resolve this serious issue. They have suggested an alternative access to the Inland Island Highway as the solution to the traffic on Corcan Road and to provide timely ambulance service to the Meadowood Subdivision. I fully support this initiative. If there are other solutions being considered by MOTI, it would be most appreciated. This area is developing quickly and engineering solutions, money, and priority need to be given by MOTI to resolving this serious vehicle/pedestrian safety issue on Corcan Road.
